Grounding mats and earthing sheets have gone from insider tip to a product category of their own. Here you can read, without exaggeration, what sleeping grounded actually involves, what to look for when buying and how to put user reports into perspective.

The principle
What does sleeping grounded mean?
Barefoot on grass, sand or stone, the body is conductively connected to the earth. Indoors, in rubber-soled shoes and in modern beds, this connection is almost always missing. Sleeping grounded restores it for the night.
Outdoors
The natural connection
Grounding is physics: as soon as there is conductive contact, the body equalises its electrical potential with that of the earth. Not every surface conducts, though. Moist soil, wet grass and damp sand conduct; dry sand and dry natural stone practically do not. Indoors, in rubber-soled shoes and in modern beds, this contact is almost always missing.
In bed
The grounding mat
In bed, conductive fibres provide the connection, linked to the protective earth of the wall socket. There is no connection to the live conductors, and there is no operating circuit in the product. All that is equalised are tiny charges coupled in from the room, in the order of millionths of an ampere. In every case, a properly installed protective earth is a prerequisite.
In the BETTER3 Anti-Stress Underblanket, grounding is permanently built in. You can see how the underblanket is constructed on the How it works page.
Buying guide
Buying a grounding mat: what to look for
There is a world of difference between a simple sheet and an integrated sleep system, in materials, safety and everyday practicality. Three points separate solid products from the rest.
Point 1
Materials and workmanship
Skin-friendly, washable textiles and permanently conductive fibres, usually silver or stainless steel. Cheap sheets often lose their conductivity after just a few washes. Ask which material is used, how often it may be washed and at what temperature.
Point 2
Safety and testing
Connection exclusively via the protective earth, tested components, a protective resistor in the lead. Make sure a supplier names specific tests rather than talking about certificates in general terms. In our case, the relevant component is registered as a class I medical device under 93/42/EEC, and the textiles are tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, certificate 40929 OETI. Important for context: such a registration concerns safety and intended purpose; it is not proof of any health effect. All documents are openly available on Trust & Evidence.
Point 3
Integrated, not added on
A loose sheet slips and needs looking after. Integrated into an underblanket, grounding becomes part of the bed: set up once, with nothing more to operate.
All three types create the same electrical connection. They differ in comfort, in care and in how long the conductivity lasts.

Before you buy
How to check whether your socket is suitable
The most common reason a grounding mat does nothing is not the product. It is the socket. Without a working protective earth there is no connection, and that affects many flats in older buildings.
Get a socket tester. A simple tester costs around €10 to €20 at a DIY store. You plug it in, and its LEDs show whether a protective earth is present and whether the conductors are wired correctly.
Read the result correctly. A tester reliably detects a missing protective earth. However, it cannot reliably tell a genuine protective earth apart from the old-style combined neutral and earth wiring found in older buildings. If in doubt, a qualified electrician has the final say.
No protective earth? Then the mat cannot work at this socket. One option is a separate line to an earth rod outdoors. Clarify this before you buy, otherwise you will end up sending it back.
If in doubt, have it measured. A qualified electrician can check the installation in a few minutes. This is particularly worthwhile in flats where nobody knows when work was last done on the consumer unit.
Honestly assessed
What the research shows, and what it doesn't
There are studies on sleeping grounded, but only a few, mostly small and some of them co-funded by manufacturers.
The best evidence available
A study with 60 participants
The most methodologically rigorous work is a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study from 2025. For 31 days, 60 people used either a grounding mat or an inactive dummy for six hours a day. Measured at the wrist, sleep duration was longer, while several other sleep parameters did not differ. Mats were tested, not underblankets.
What it does not show
Indications are not proof
An independent replication in a larger group is still lacking. In 2023, a German court prohibited a competitor from advertising health claims for a grounding mat because the studies submitted did not reflect the state of established scientific knowledge. We share this assessment of the evidence.
That is why you will not find any statements from us about what grounding does in your body. We describe how the underblanket is made, what it consists of and which tests it has passed. Everything else is for your own experience to decide, and you may also notice nothing at all.

Putting it in context
Experiences with grounding mats
Search for grounding mats and you will find enthusiastic reports and sharp criticism. Both have their place, and both need to be read the right way.
Feedback varies widely. Some users describe their nights as different from before, others report noticing no difference. Both are individual statements made under uncontrolled conditions. Read them as a snapshot of opinion, not as evidence.
02
Beware of promises of a cure
In 2023, a German court prohibited a manufacturer of grounding mats from advertising with claims about cortisol levels, circulation and anti-inflammatory effects, because the studies submitted were not sufficient. Reputable suppliers therefore describe what their product does technically and what it is made of. Judge every supplier by this standard, including us.
03
Tests, not opinions
Whatever can be measured should be tested: materials, safety, certification. What our statements are based on is openly available on Trust & Evidence.
04
Try it at your own pace
In the end, your own night decides, and it may also stay the same. You will find the return periods in the shop, and in our partners' anti-stress hotels you can try the sleep system for a week before you buy anything.
Frequently asked questions
Grounded sleep: quick answers
What does sleeping grounded mean?
Being conductively connected to the earth's potential while you sleep, similar to walking barefoot on damp ground. In bed, this is done by a mat or an underblanket with conductive fibres, connected to the protective earth of the wall socket.
Grounding sheet or grounding mat: what is the difference?
A grounding sheet is a thin sheet with woven-in conductive threads that is stretched over the mattress. A grounding mat or an underblanket with integrated grounding is padded and combines grounding with comfort. In the BETTER³ Anti-Stress Underblanket, grounding is permanently integrated into the underblanket, so there is no extra part in the bed.
Is sleeping grounded safe?
The product is connected to the protective earth, not to the live conductors, and contains no operating circuit. Three prerequisites are important. First, the socket must have a properly installed protective earth, which can be checked with a socket tester or by a qualified electrician. Second, the building's electrical installation as a whole must be sound, because a faulty protective earth conductor can itself carry voltage. Third: if you have an electronic implant, such as a pacemaker, or are under medical treatment, talk to your doctor before buying. Our products are not a treatment and do not replace medical advice.
What is scientifically proven about the effects?
Little. There are a few small studies, the most methodologically rigorous being a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study from 2025 with 60 participants over 31 days. It found a longer sleep duration measured by a wrist sensor, while several other sleep parameters did not differ. Mats were tested, not underblankets, and an independent replication in a larger group is still lacking. So there are indications, but no proof.
What do users report about grounding mats?
Feedback varies widely. Some describe their nights as different from before, others report noticing no difference. Both are self-reports by individuals under uncontrolled conditions. They allow no conclusions about what you yourself will experience.
How much does a grounding mat cost?
Simple grounding sheets start in the low hundreds of euros. A padded underblanket with integrated grounding costs considerably more, but there is no extra part in the bed. You will find the current prices of our products in the shop.
