Sleep tourism: Guests book the night

Sleep tourism is not a renovation project. The sleep system moves into your existing bed, duvet and underblanket, while your own furnishings stay on view. The room becomes a bookable premium category, in days rather than months, with no closure and no new furniture. On this page: the figures behind the trend, what your hotel needs to provide and what it costs.

The trend

What is sleep tourism?

It began as a lifestyle topic, and now there are figures. They are unspectacular, and that is exactly what makes them useful.

Demand

Guests check the bed before they unpack

Three quarters of travellers check whether they can expect a good night's sleep the moment they first walk into the room. For 22 per cent, sleep-related factors are the most important criterion when choosing a hotel, 24 per cent specifically look for quiet accommodation, and 21 per cent read reviews of bed quality beforehand. And 7 per cent check out early if their expectations are not met.

Willingness to pay

Eleven per cent will pay more for it

11 per cent of respondents say they are happy to pay more for a good night's sleep. That sounds like very little. Across 60 rooms, it means six to seven. That is precisely why the Anti-Stress Bedroom starts with a single room rather than a whole floor.

Figures from a representative survey by OnePoll on behalf of Premier Inn, 4,000 respondents in Germany, as reported in the Allgemeine Hotel- und Gastronomie-Zeitung.

Putting it into practice

Improving sleep comfort in your hotel

In most hotels, every category has the same bed. The difference between Standard and Superior comes down to square metres, view and balcony, things dictated by the building that cannot be multiplied. That is exactly why the price gap between categories has a ceiling. The night is the one service every guest uses, and in almost every hotel it goes unmonetised.

Lever 1

The bed itself

The duvet and underblanket move into your existing bed. No new furniture, no new slatted base, no new mattress, and your own furnishings stay on view. That is the difference from suppliers who sell a complete bed system, and it lowers the investment threshold considerably.

Lever 2

The category

The equipped room becomes a bookable premium category with its own name and price premium. This makes sleep quality visible, comparable and sellable, for guests and for the hotel alike.

Lever 3

Communication

The best sleep is of no use if nobody hears about it. Room description, booking portals, check-in information and guest folder all tell the same story, in line with advertising law.

The numbers

When an Anti-Stress Bedroom pays off

Equipping a room is a one-off investment. There is no ongoing licence fee and no revenue share, and the marketing materials are included.

Premium per night for the new category€20
Nights sold per year at 60 per cent occupancy219
Additional revenue per room per year€4,380
With three equipped rooms€13,140

Example calculation with openly stated assumptions. Plug in your own figures: your realistic premium, your occupancy, your number of rooms. How quickly the investment pays for itself depends on these three figures alone. We work it through with your numbers in a consultation, before anything is signed. If the numbers don't add up, we will say so.

There is a second effect, and it is harder to quantify: rest and recovery know no season. An offer that works as well in November as it does in August helps exactly where rooms would otherwise stay empty.

Before we talk

What your hotel needs to provide

An Anti-Stress Bedroom is not a piece of furniture you simply put in place. Four things change in your operation. You should know them before we talk.

The offer

From trend to room category

With BETTER3, the sleep tourism trend becomes a concrete category in your hotel: the Anti-Stress Bedroom. An existing room, newly equipped, positioned as a premium offer.

Frequently asked questions

Sleep tourism: quick answers

What is sleep tourism?

A travel trend in which guests choose their hotel specifically for the quality of sleep. For several years, hospitality trade media have described it as one of the most important developments in relaxation holidays. Reliable figures come from sources including a survey by OnePoll on behalf of Premier Inn among 4,000 respondents in Germany.

How much does an Anti-Stress Bedroom cost?

Equipping a room is a one-off investment, depending on bed size and number of beds. There is no ongoing licence fee and no revenue share, and the marketing materials are included. Whether it pays off depends on two factors: the premium you can achieve in your region and the occupancy of the new category. We work through both with your own figures in a consultation.

How do washing and care work?

The duvet and underblanket stay in the room, and the bed linen is changed as before. We clarify washability, temperature and changing intervals with your laundry before you decide. Your housekeeping team is trained in one session and receives a quick guide.

What about guests with allergies?

You receive the full material declaration, so that if in doubt your reception can rebook the guest rather than guess. The textiles are tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, certificate 40929 OETI.

What can I write in my room description?

Not everything that seems obvious. Health claims are tightly restricted by law, however convinced a hotel may be of the product. That is why we provide you with checked wording for your website, booking portals and guest folder, so your team does not have to weigh it up itself.

Is a sleep concept worthwhile for small hotels too?

Especially for them. An Anti-Stress Bedroom is created in an existing room, with no renovation. Small hotels gain a premium category and a point of difference that large chains cannot copy quickly.

How quickly can an Anti-Stress Bedroom be set up?

Equipping a room takes days, not months: install the bedding set, train the team, adopt the marketing material. You start with a single room and expand once it has proven itself.
